Saturday Night and Sunday Morning is one of the most perfectly turned film titles. The full gamut of one stifled workingman's emotional life is right there: Saturday night's booze-fed highs tailed by Sunday morning coming down. Arthur Seaton, played by a peerless Albert Finney, is a young machinist in a Nottingham factory. His wages buy endless pints, which dull his judgment enough that he begins an ill-advised affair with Brenda, the wife of an older co-worker. At the same time, he's seeing Doreen, a single woman closer to his own age. This 1960 film is a stalwart classic of modern British cinema. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning screens at the Tivoli Theatre as part of the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum's series A Critical Eye: Avant-Garde Cinema of the 1960s.
