According to Greek mythology, descendants of Hercules founded the city of Sparta. Sparta the band, however, is the offspring of post-hardcore gods At the Drive-In and since their 2001 conception, the group has amped the angst higher than Mount Olympus (witness the shout-along new single, "Taking Back Control"). But now that original guitarist Paul Hinojos is with rival ATDI offshoot the Mars Volta he's been replaced by ex-Denali/Engine Down member Keeley Davis will Sparta's upcoming third album add lyrical fuel to this musical throwdown? Time will tell, but at least fans won't have to wait ten years for the outcome: The visceral yet melodic Threes is due in October.
