Beauty and the Beast

The theory that love can cause crazy things to happen has been repeatedly put to the test through numerous adaptations of the French fantasy, Beauty and the Beast. An enchanting girl named Belle tames a savage beast, whipping the creature into a lustful frenzy -- what's more French than that? In 1946, the famed poet/auteur Jean Cocteau translated this magical tale to the big screen. Heralded as a classic, the movie's stunning visuals, emotional angst and fearless passion are capped by amazing performances from Jean Marais and Josette Day. Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast screens tonight as part of the Classic French Film Series and the Webster Film Series.
