Workers removed the Christopher Columbus statue early Tuesday morning from Tower Grove Park. We were there, along with a collection of joggers, bikers and anyone who could make it to the park in time. The small crowd cheered as the larger-than-life Columbus was hoisted off his base by a crane and then laid down on a flatbed truck to be driven away to an undisclosed location. Two guys in Hawaiian prints showed up a little later, shouted that removing the statue was the work of "fascists," argued with people and stormed off to sarcastic applause.
