Knead Bakehouse + Provisions After realizing his passion for fermentation centered around bread, not beer, Knead Bakehouse (3467 Hampton Avenue, kneadbakehouse.com) co-owner AJ Brown enrolled in the prestigious Institute Paul Bocuse in Lyon, France, where he learned the basics for making world-class sourdough bread. Right after his return from France, he and his wife, Kirsten, started selling his wares at area farmers' markets, then opened the delightful bakeshop, where the delicious sourdough sets the standard for the form.

25. Hamilton’s Urban Steakhouse and Bourbon Bar (2101 Chouteau Avenue, hamiltonsteak.com) “Hamilton's appears to be a hole in the wall until you step in and realize the place is HUGE with a relaxed, rustic charm. Excellent meal and well crafted drinks! I didn't have a photo of the bread but the bread and butter is warm and yummy before the meal! I also ordered a lemon drop with rum instead of vodka. The substitution was an additional charge (crazy) but whatever. My meal was 10s across the board!! Carrots had the sweet glaze in every bite, the potatoes alone were so creamy and flavorful but when you pair them with the juice of the steak? OMG. The steak was seasoned with love, cooked to a perfect medium and could have been cut with a butter knife! I was extremely satisfied with my meal. I wouldn't hesitate to come back.” - Money F. on Yelp

Cate Zone (8148 Olive Boulevard, University City; 314-738-9923) This perpetually packed Chinese cafe serves food that is authentic, but it's not traditional — at least not in the stereotypical way you might imagine. Eager diners endure the wait times for a table because of what they’re rewarded with on the other side: Tender lamb served on skewers, Hot Crisp Fish (buttery white fish that melts in your mouth) and “Honey Crisp Sweet Potatoes” (battered hunks of deep-fried potatoes, candied with melted sugar, then crowned with spun sugar).
